Bachelor’s degree required; California Emergency Substitute Teacher Permit required or ability to obtain California Emergency Substitute Teacher Permit within 60 days of employment.  Experience working with students with developmental disabilities. Experience with workability/transition education strongly preferred.

All candidates are required to submit to prehire screening  including: Criminal background check, Drug and Alcohol screening, Department of Justice Fingerprint clearances, pre-employment physical and current TB test.

Job Description Summary:

WORK HOURS:  Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day. Hours may vary based on specific campus needs.


GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:    Under the guidance and supervision of the classroom Teacher and/or Principal, assist teaching staff with student instruction and direct supervision.  Participate in the development and implementation of students’ behavioral programs in an academic classroom setting including the development of positive relationships, crisis intervention and implementation of school policies and procedures.  


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  The essential duties include, but are not limited to, the items below:

  • Assist teacher with curriculum, grading and maintaining student behavior in the classroom and during off-campus classroom activities (field trips, work programs, etc.)
  • Communicate IEP goals to students regularly; assist in development of measurable learning objectives and guide students towards mastery.  Correct student errors in a positive and timely manner.
  • Utilize appropriate instructional materials and instructional techniques as prescribed by classroom teacher.
  • Implement lesson plans as designed by classroom teacher.
  • Assist in tracking the completion of students’ classroom assignments and homework.
  • Participate in the development of treatment plans; implement interventions as prescribed in plan.
  • Attend to hygiene needs of student, toileting and dressing as needed (changing of diapers).
  • Assist in the implementation of Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-ACT) techniques.
  • Assist in the implementation of Specialized Classroom Management (SCM) to include data collection.
  • Perform duties of a 1:1 Aide when needed and may be temporarily re-assigned to meet staffing standards.
  • Attend in-service trainings and all other required meetings.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures found in the Bright Futures Academy Employee Handbook.
  • Perform duties of Special Education (Substitute) Teacher as needed; teach special education students in a self-contained classroom (those with a valid sub credential).
  • Maintain a positive and professional demeanor; work cooperatively with multi-disciplinary teams to serve a diverse and challenging student population.
  • Maintain a highly structured classroom and appropriate level of student supervision at all times.
  • Complete incident reports and accident reports when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
