High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience working with special needs and/or at-risk youth desired.  Valid A or B Class California Driver License, Passenger Endorsement, and School Bus Certificate, and clean H-6 report from the DMV required. Must become certified in Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-ACT) and successfully complete Specialized Classroom Management training (SCM) within 90 days of employment. 

All candidates will be subject to a criminal background check through the California Department of Justice and the FBI as well as submit a current TB test.


Job Description Summary:


Provide safe and efficient transportation for special education students.  Must maintain a good driving record, ability to operate full-size passenger van with up to nine students, maintain cleanliness of vans, and assist with vehicle delivery for maintenance and repairs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following items:

  • Transport students to and from home, school, and/or field trips safely and in accordance with school schedules, as assigned, utilizing company owned passenger van.
  • Operate a two way radio
  • Oversee and assist with the loading and unloading of students, releasing students only to authorized individuals; ensure safety belts are fastened.
  • Operate ADA compliant wheelchair vans and associated equipment (ramp or lift); load and unload students in wheelchairs; inspect wheelchairs for operational safety, only allowing properly functioning wheelchairs onboard; ensure tie-downs and safety-belts are fastened; safely position and secure wheelchairs in accordance with van manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Maintain order and discipline of passengers; document and report severe behaviors.
  • Conduct mandatory safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily.
  • Maintain vehicles in safe, clean operating condition at all times reporting discrepancies immediately via Daily Pre-trip Inspection form or by written Vehicle Repair Request; install windshield wipers, small light bulbs, and special safety belts/ vests; remove all trash, sweep, wipe down all doors and dashboard, and clean all windows daily; maintain proper air pressure and fluid levels; follow established safety and security protocol.
  • Follow prescribed drop off and pickup order of assigned students, consulting with supervisor prior to any deviation.
  • Monitor students with special health problems; follow prescribed instructions and procedures or difficulties encountered; administer first aid, as necessary, and call for emergency assistance if needed.
  • Transport and deliver medication, personal belongings, messages and memos between parents and school staff; collect and return students' personal property when entering and disembarking.
  • Maintain records and reports including, but not limited to: mileage, maintenance, and stop times.
  • Attend meetings, programs, and in-service training as assigned.
  • Maintain required licenses and/ or certificates in compliance with applicable laws.
  • Notify dispatcher or supervisor of any delays in scheduled route.
  • Assist with other routes when breakdown or other unusual circumstances occur.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
